VeloRacks, a newly launched iPhone application, makes it easy for Seattle’s bicycle community to find bicycle racks throughout the city. Using Seattle’s Open Data Project (data.seattle.gov), the VeloRacks team has mapped all 2,500+ bicycle racks found throughout the City of Seattle and presents that data in an elegant and intuitive way.
By opening VeloRacks, cyclists can see a map, centered on their current location, and view all of the bicycle racks around them. Once a rack has been located, the cyclist can see detailed information about the rack, such as its total bike capacity. The map can also be used to search the city for racks. The cyclist simply moves the map to a desired location (within the city of Seattle) and scans the area for racks.
The application also allows cyclists to store their favorite racks for later use by marking them as “favorites”. A great way to use this feature is for trip planning – the cyclist can mark racks in locations that they will be going to in order to know where to park.
Cyclists also have the added advantage of seeing many of the businesses near to their selected rack, through the integration of Google Places data. Many different types of businesses have been included such as restaurants, cafes, banks, and more. We give you the address of business and show you how far away it is from your current location. Very handy, especially if you’re new to an area!
VeloRacks is the must-have application for the Seattle cyclist. Download it today from the iTunes App Store!
